Straw Wattles

FOR EROSION CONTROL, STORM WATER RUNOFF CONTROL, AND SEDIMENT CONTROL

check the website for more information: www.strawwattles.com

        Straw Wattles:

  • filter stormwater runoff water
  • spread overland waterflow
  • trap sediment to prevent erosion
  • prevent erosion by reducing slope lengths and slowing and spreading water flow.
  • diminish storm water runoff pollution by capturing sediment.
  • enhance revegetation of slopes denuded by fires and timber harvest.
  • reduce sheet erosion and prevent rill and gully development.
  • impede sediment transport into waterways
  • are more efficient than silt fences and don't have to be removed.
  • are velocity dissipation devices
  • work as check dams to prevent sheet erosion as well as rill and gully development.
  • are level spreaders
  • abut end to end tightly and do not leak between wattles
  • can be laid along the edge of the sidewalks to keep soil on site and prevent it from washing onto pavement and asphalt
  • can be wrapped around storm drain inlets to slow water and settle out sediment
  • capture sediment and spread water rather than concentrating the flow and volume

Straw Wattles last 3 to 5 years and can be left in place. They replace silt fences, straw bales, earth berms, willow wattles, sandbags, and earth water-bars. Used with tacked straw they are an efficient and cost effective replacement for erosion control blankets.

Straw Wattles have been used by the Federal Highway Administration, National Forests, State Highway Departments, State Park & Recreation Departments, CA Dept. of Conservation-Division of Mines and Geology, Resource Conservation Districts, and City & County governments.

EROSION & SEDIMENT CONTROL SPECIFICATION:

Straw Wattles shall be manufactured from rice straw and be wrapped in a tubular black plastic netting. The netting shall have a strand thickness of 0.03 inch, and a knot thickness of 0.055 and a weight of 0.35 ounce per foot (each +/- 10%) and shall be made from 85% high density polyethylene, 14% ethyl vinyl acetate and 1% color for UV inhibition.

Straw Wattles shall be nine inches in diameter (+/- one inch), twenty-five feet long (+/- 0.5 feet) and weigh pproximately 35 pounds (+/- 10%).

Straw Wattles shall be installed as shown on the plans. They shall be placed on contour and staked with 3/4 x 3/4 x 24 inch wood stakes at four foot on center. The ends of adjacent Straw Wattles shall be abutted to each other snugly.

The contract price paid per linear foot of Straw Wattles shall include full compensation for furnishing all labor, materials, including wood stakes, tools, equipment, and incidentals, and for doing all the work involved in furnishing and installing Straw Wattles, complete in place, including furnishing and installing the wood stakes, as shown on the plans and directed by the Engineer.
